The NIH Roadmap for Research is a relatively new NIH-wide initiative instituted by Dr. Elias Zerhouni, director of NIH. Its origins lie in, among other things, the increasingly complex health problems that present challenges requiring the science of many disciplines. The first round of Roadmap initiatives have been funded and as we are in the 2nd round of solicitations for this projected 5 year effort, it is critical for nurse investigators to participate fully in a number of Roadmap and Roadmap-affiliated projects that will be initiated at academic health care centers around the country. Senior investigators, in particular, need to take the lead in responding to the opportunities provided by Roadmap initiatives. The intent of the Roadmap, with its emphasis on interdisciplinary research and research training and on increased recognition of the importance, relevance, and inclusion of behavioral and social sciences for addressing many health and health care challenges, presents an exciting new opportunity for senior nurse investigators.
