Conducting Concurrent Research Projects: Joys, Concerns, and Incentives

Carolyn Sampselle, PhD, Professor, Nursing Department, Nursing Department, University of Michigan School of Nursing, Room 4236 400 N. Ingalls, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-0482

Surprising as it may sound, serving as Principal Investigator of more than one research project at once can energize one’s science. Such benefits derive as the welcome use of established research protocols that have demonstrated their effectiveness, opportunities to merge databases in order to answer more complex research questions, and the potential for an ongoing synergy of insights gained in one arena that readily transfer to a second. The potential drain on PI resources is obvious. Valuable strategies to conserve PI capacity include recruitment of capable Project Directors and the cultivation of interdisciplinary colleagues, who are pursuing related programs of research. Institutions should consider developing supports and incentive mechanisms that encourage PIs to submit proposals for concurrently funded projects
