Competing Continuations: Perspectives of the Principal Investigator

Joellen Wilbur, PhD, RN, FAAN, Associate Dean for Research, Public &Mental Health, and Administrative Nursing, Public &Mental Health, and Administrative Nursing, University of Illinois at Chicago, 845 S. Damen, Chicago, IL 60612

Generally NIH competing continuation grant applications have a higher probability of funding than new grant applications. Competing continuation grants that support a program of research is not the norm among nurse researchers. An important step in changing the norm is recognition of the critical milestones in the research project timeline that increase potential for a successfully funded competing continuation application. Researchers with a track record of successfully funded competing continuation grants will discuss project and institutional assets that contribute to success. Specifically, they will describe effective ways to identify and maintain a project timeline needed to generate the progress report and publications that are supportive of the next project. They also will discuss the research project planning and institutional supports that enable the principal investigator to attain the milestones critical for submission of a competing continuation application. Processes and environments that assist nurse scientists to maintain continuous research support can enable them to maximize research productivity and positively impact health and health care.
