Background- The prevalence of dementia is expected to arise, as well, the impact on family caregivers (FC) is expected to increase significantly in the coming decades. Nonetheless, little research has been published into how FCs undertake such explorations in their day-to-day caregiving task in Taiwan.
Aim-This study focused the perceptions and managements of behavior problems among FCs of dementia elders.
Method- Thirty FCs, ranging in age from 42 to 78, with a mean of 56.6 years, and predominantly female, were interviewed with semi-structured questionnaire intensively and data were analyzed using life histories approach. An in-depth literature search was also undertaken.
Findings- Memory loss was the very first warning sign to awaken the notification of FCs. Most FCs perceived the dementia but did not recognize the irreversibility of illness, which made them embrace improper hope for any recovering. Besides, thematic analyses revealed 3 dimensions, physical, psychiatric, and environment related behavior problems. FCs°&brkbar; behavior managements were analyzed as: balance mutual togetherness, utilize reliable alliances, and apply living equipments. Virtually, the image of person-centered philosophy from caregiving processes, individualized, humanistic, and creative formats were found, which deserved more studies in depth.
Conclusion- Taiwanese FC°&brkbar;s oriental perceptions and managements were recognized as protective factors against hazardous circumstances and positive indicators for quality care.
